These enormous metal structures are certainly impressive in their scale but are these childish constructions making a mockery of the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition? I say no! These wonderful sculptures are to laugh with not at. How wonderful to bring such a sense of playfulness to the quadrangle of this ancient art establishment. I particularly enjoyed watching the children playing around these towering beasts which used the space so elegantly.

Inside, the art work was as refreshingly varied as ever. From traditional landscape etchings to an hilarious video projection installation by Tony Ousler. Just a few of my favourite pieces were:Obfusion, a beautiful textured acrylic painting by Graham Mileson; Hours (Western Hemisphere Mode) a sumptuous abstract acrylic by Frank Bowling RA,;Perennial Winter, a brilliant layered, textured painting by Hannah Maybank; Life is Full of Pleasant Gifts and Surprises, You Know! by Fiona Rae RA; and the fantastic Metal Fucking Rats by Tim Noble and Sue Webster where what seemed to be a random pile of metal rubbish on the floor magically turned into the image of rats copulating when you looked at the shadow projected by it onto the wall. There were literally hundreds of wonderful works of art to look at and it gave me lots of food for thought. I’m not sure if one visit per year is enough to take it all in!
