Away Day
Here’s a slideshow from our Post Artists ‘Away Day’, much of which happened at Wandle Park in Colliers Wood last bank holiday weekend. NB: For captions whilst watching the slideshow, press i on your keyboard. The captions could be a little confusing as it says by fionalongart next to all the titles. Whilst this is true of the photos, the artist’s names are below each title.
My piece: ‘Pylon Idol’ was vandalised each evening which was pretty upsetting at first, especially after all the wonderful help I had building it, but in the end I realised that it was an opportunity to keep trying out new things with the piece and I think it improved over the weekend! I wanted the sculpture to have a basic, elemental, magical feel to it so perhaps it ’spoke’ to the vandals, making it irresistable to tamper with! I’d like to say a massive thank you to my assistants Vicki Hunt, Amy Lord and Sam Robinson who helped me make the piece for many back breaking hours on the first day, and to Ray Murphy, David Berridge, John O’Hare, Mark, Jenny Rolfe Herbert and everyone else who kindly helped me re-build it each day! I couldn’t have done it without you!
When we arrived to construct the work for the first time, I was excited and intrigued to discover a magical looking, woven twig and leaf eye in the exact position directly below the centre of the pylon where my piece was to go! I wondered if someone else held ‘felt’ something in that place and considered it to be magical or spiritual in some way! It turns out that they had…one of the other artists, Linda Duffy who made some beautiful and subtle interventions in the vicinity.
