Claustrophila Blackboard

I recently went to the exhibition of a heroine of mine: Louise Bourgeois at Tate Modern. It was fantastic! Her work is very psychoanalytical and is mostly based on her resentments from childhood. She’s well into her 90s now and still seems as angry as ever! You’d think she’d have gotten over it by now! Having said that she’s still producing highly skilled and resonant work in the seventh decade of her amazing art career.

I particularly loved an installation of hers called Destruction of the Father. It is just the kind of thing I’ve been wanting to create in order to show my ideas of absorption. I have had dreams which looked very similar! I found it tremendously appealing and wanted to jump in. The description, however, described the piece as claustrophobic and I could sense that, that was how others were reacting to it. This has made me realise that I do not suffer from claustrophobia but that perhaps a lot of these feelings I’ve been having whilst examining my psyche can actually be boiled down to claustrophila? My quest continues……

I am glad you enjoyed this exhibition. it actually warrents a second visit as I found it very large and not a little overwhelming. My daughters were very engaged with the work too, and like you enjoyed the Destruction of the Father piece, but would very much like to apply it not to their father, but my partner!
