Urban Sprawl
This painting is a part of my Urban Flux series. I used images from Google Earth of Shepherd’s Bush where I live and the White City development which is being built very nearby. I enlarged different sections of the image to different degrees, repeated and reorientated them, creating a disorientating yet clearly urban image. It is painted with liquid bitumen and household paint to further give a sense of the urban. The paint is cracking in places to show the way the city changes. There is a feeling of urban sprawl with gentrification creeping into poorer areas or degeneration creeping into richer areas, but which way around is it?
