This piece is based upon a book called "The White Hotel". It is about psychoanalysis following horrors that happened to the Jews during the Second World War. It explores themes of morphic resonance and the collective unconscious. Sometimes we keep our memories and mementos in a drawer and lock them away but these memories can't be locked away as the fingers stand higher than the drawer.

Profound! Some things in life/history touch us deaply & change us forever. Your portrail is loaded with energy. Very well done & told. My personal memories of these events/times brings a gasp, my head hangs/a tear is shed.
Excellent conceptual work. Congratulations. It is so difficult for people to make social comment successfully, but you have done it. Great work.

Fiona you have caused so much emotion here and this is only the beginning! Artists who have the guts to speak out like this are many but not many hit the tone as it should be.Last week I was In jerusalem and visited the children monument in Jad Vashem. It was simple and poignant and I think you have created a very similar effect with this marvellous piece of art and with your permission I d like to put it on my blog with a text so more people will understand.

this is a very poetic piece.....i like what you've said about it...but it transcends that.....it could mean so many things.....i think that any viewer could appreciate it independent of your description.....and then it is made all the more powerful by your words.....we all have fingers sticking out too far of our hidden drawers......very, very nicely done.....
i see penises... is it weird?

a really nice piece.
This is a profound piece.....it really evokes emotion

Cool, i was thinking Louise Bourgeois
Hiya Fi,

That is an interesting idea from the book, I like the way you use the red string through your work as a theme. The horrors of human history are terrible indeed.

I can see how some old white chipboard might look like a drawer in the piece, and I'm guessing that 'hotel' is an assylum and the people there are tied and controlled by that red thread from the outside.

"morphic resonance and the collective unconscious" - perhaps that means something particular to the reader in psychological terms or academic papers on consiousness, but what does it mean in normal human language?

I prefer your excellent paintings, because they show a trained eye.
Also, because one can engage with your paintings rather more easily.

Sorry if my comments are not to your liking, I prefer to comment on all work in an honest way if I can.

Cheers.
Thank you all for your comments!
Hi Ben, no I'm not offended by your comments at all. Each to their own. I prefer not to explain too much about works like these so as to provoke interpretations such as yours which I think is superb! I am running along with a theme of red thread and ribbons at the moment as I feel that they are evocative of so many causes and emotions.

Morphic Resonance is a theory by Rupert Sheldrake which is strongly disputed by the scientific community. It suggests that are thoughts are physical waves that can travel through space and time which can explain phenomena such as groups of animals learning things around the globe at similar times, why you know who is calling before you pick up the phone and why your dog or cat knows when you are about to come home even at an unexpected time.
Thanks Fi, nice to know how it works for you.
your piece really does express something to me about the collective unconscious, and the personal unconscious. i think its a really excellent idea.

Gosh, Fiona... how cool. I just finished a book entitled, Beach Music by Pat Conroy, where 2 of the characters escaped the wrath of the German army during that time. Everytime I read something about the Jews and their plight during that time... I'm in shock that human beings could treat other human beings like that. Hitler mustve been the most evil man that ever walked the face of the earth.

Fiona... one more thing. As far as "morphic resonance" goes, I prefer to call it psychic ability. :) We all have it. Just some of us dont have to "study" as hard to use it.
Thank you Rosemary and Amy! It's interesting that you shold say that it looks like my unconscious since this idea did come to me in my dreams! I keep a dream diary/sketchbook and it's amazing how many ideas come to me in my sleep! I am very telepathic and I love science so the pseudo scientific explanation of morphic resonance appeals to me.
wonderful
