There are two reasons that I call this painting New Forest Elephants. The first is that when my dad was a boy the family had a French exchange student over to stay with them for a while. They decided to take the French boy for a drive to show him the area. The New Forest is famous for it's ponies that wander around virtually wild. So, as they drove around they kept pointing to the ponies saying "New Forest pony" and then they would see a cow and say "New Forest cow" etc, etc. After a while to their great surprise they saw a man who must have been from a travelling circus, walking along the road with a large African elephant! The French boy turned around pointing at it rather nonchalantly and said "New Forest elephant.

The other reason for the title is that in the art group that I used to attend in the village, there was a running joke that all you had to do to sell a painting was to put a New Forest pony in it. There was a lady who had tried to sell some paintings and had failed to do so for years. She was moving house and wanted to get rid of them so she put New Forest somewhere in the title of all the paintings and without changing the paintings in any way or the price, they all sold on the first day of the exhibition! I find this hilarious so I thought I'd take the pxxx a little and put New Forest in the title of something where it really doesn't make sense (unless there's a travelling circus in town)!!

I'm thinking of adding some highlights to the eyes even though they weren't actually there in the image I was working on. What do you think?

I think some catchlights in the eyes would definitely make this jump a little more. This is nice work in oil!
Great job. Very sweet.

Excellent job, I think highlights would put it over the top. thanks for sharing
I vote for no highlights -- the eyes are great as is. (4 Aces)
Very sweet image. A nice balance of realism and expressionism.
Lovely family portrait .....

Interesting!
beautiful!
gorgeous!
Yup, highlights would probably be ok, try it and if you don't like it, cover them up. Absence of the highlights in the eyes makes them hollow and weird ... but a beautiful mother and child portrait. (4 Aces)
Sweet capture!!

"Obsessive flickrites!"
I was just having the same problem with my portrait - decided to leave as is. This is SO ambitious! Daunting! and really well done!
I vote for highlights in the eyes. It will make them look more real! Great work!

it feels like there should be highlights in those eyes... for some reason i feel that was you basic instinct. go with that... beautiful artwork!
Endearing! Thank you for letting us hear the story behind it! I agree a touch of light in the eyes! Gorgeous!
Very very nice. Affection is love !!
What a wonderful painting, I thought it was a photo untill I read it, I love it!
beautiful rendering or amazing animals. the pose you captured is very loving also. im not sure im comfortable with the matte blackness of the eyes. but otherwise its superbly done.
Very well done. Great detail. I agree the eyes need highlights
Fiona, I've already commented on this INCREDIBLE painting of yours, but I couldnt just "not" say something (please excuse my double negative!) You are extremely talented, and I hope your London exhibit provides you with a plethora of artistic opportunities!

P.S. I would add eyeball highlights, too. Its unanimous! :)
great story, and yes to highlights!
Excellent painting, very realistic rendition of the elephants.
I have always love the fact that working with oils gives you, the artist, a lot of latitude...put in the highlights, if you don't like them.....wipe them out. It is kinda like a power trip...experiment and decide. ;-)
I've commented before and as I look at it again I am especially impressed by the trunks and the overall realistic rendition of the elephants. From the Third Page Group

beautiful
no highlights!
I think this an extremely well composed, and executed painting. You did a marvelous job with the detail, and the light. It's a touching pose, which you avoided letting become maudlin.

I think you should add the highlights to the eyes. It will give them more life.
