When I was going to painting classes in the New Forest taught by the wonderful Fred Sinkinson, we needed a portrait model with an interesting face. I thought my Grandad might enjoy doing it so I asked and here he is. He sat for two classes and managed to keep quiet for 4 hours which is unheard of! He doesn't know it yet but I'm going to give this to him for Christmas.

Thank you everyone! Yes it is finished. He was sitting several metres away from me so there was a limit to the amount of detail I could put in. I just painted what I was able to see which I think is a good thing. It gives an overall impression of Grandad without me getting too fiddly and detailed. I wasn't the most talented artist in the class but my portrait was certainly the best likeness. They all said it was easy for me because I know him so well and perhaps that is true. The strange thing is that I made him look far more stern than he really is but I suppose that might be because it is very unnatural for him to sit still and quiet! We were also focussing on structure more than features.

Hey Fiona,

I think it's really an amazing portrait. At first it looks simple but then the colours show the structure and form of the figure in a sublime way. I don't know what else to say coz I'm a beginner, but I just love it and I think your Grandad will be very happy and proud of you at Christmass, if he's not already.

4 hours is very quick for that work, excellent and thanks for posting to our group.
